This is the second in a series of events produced by CNU New York to introduce more people to New Urbanism and the importance of how our physical surroundings affect the way we function in our daily activities. The first of these events was last October in Chautauqua, New York, with three days of presentations, discussions, and sharing about land use decision making tools and what we have come to know as “placemaking”. The second event is our Schenectady program, which will continue this effort, with a bit more focus on the economics of placemaking and how the ways in which we decide to use land affects our triple bottom line.

The featured manuals are the National Association of City Transportation Official's (NACTO) Urban Bikeway Design Guide, the Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE) / America Walks (AW) Steps to a Walkable Community, and the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU)/Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Designing Walkable Urban Thoroughfares guide.

Archtober & CNU New York: Principles of Urban Design

ONE OF OUR FOUR ARCHTOBER events is a walking tour that uses the streets of New York City to illustrate the principles of urbanism and urban design. This will be the newest tour in a series given by John Massengale for the Institute for Classical Art & Architecture (ICAA) and the universities of Miami, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech.

Massengale is a Board member of the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU), the founding Board Chair of CNU New York, and a former Board member of the ICAA and Federated Conservationists of Westchester County (FCWC). Co-author with Robert A.M. Stern of New York 1900, Metropolitan Architecture & Urbanism 1890-1915 (Rizzoli, 1983), he is writing Street Design, The Art & Practice of Making Complete Streets (J. Wiley & Sons, 2013) with Victor Dover. An architect and urbanist, Massengale has won awards for architecture, urban design, architectural history and historic preservation.

WHEN & WHERE: The tour will meet Saturday, October 27 at 9:15 am on the steps of Federal Hall, 26 Wall Street at the head of Broad Street, and will end at 12:15, with a Dutch Treat lunch at a location to be determined for anyone who wishes to stay.

Since 1991, the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) has worked for the development of walkable and sustainable cities, towns and neighborhoods and against the spread of auto-based sprawl.

Each year CNU holds an annual Congress where New Urbanist practitioners (planners, architects, traffic engineers, public officials and housing and retail experts) share their experiences with other people interested in learning how to improve their communities. In June 2014, the 22^nd Congress (CNU 22) will be held in Buffalo, New York. 

This Retreat is to enable attendees from Upstate New York and the nearby Great Lakes states to learn what New Urbanism is and how it can improve the built environment and economy of cities, towns and villages.  We need your help this weekend to identify the issues that will be the core of the 2014 Congress agenda.

In a world racked by climate change, financial instability, social injustice and high unemployment, a metropolitan and regional approach to building and development will help us both locally and globally. Shelley Poticha, Director of the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has been at the forefront of the Obama administration's mandate to have HUD, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation work together to support sustainable, affordable and livable community development. Jonathan F.P. Rose is President of the Jonathan Rose Companies, an award-winning private sector leader in creating and regenerating vibrant, attractive, healthy, and equitable communities, including Via Verde, a 1.5-acre green, mixed-use development in the South Bronx. Rose and Poticha have collaborated for more than three decades on work ranging from individual buildings to regional plans. They bring valuable insight into the future of community building in New York in these difficult times. Michael Kimmelman was appointed the chief architecture critic  for the The New York Times in the summer of 2011. He is an author, critic, columnist, and a concert pianist. He has written on issues of public housing, public space, community development and social responsibility.
