In keeping with this year’s retrospective theme, “Then & Now,” leading urbanist and sustainable suburban redevelopment expert Ellen Dunham-Jones returns to Rochester to give her impressions of what has changed for the better and what still needs work. Ellen Dunham-Jones is a professor of architecture and directs the MS in Urban Design at the Georgia Institute of Technology. An authority on sustainable suburban redevelopment, she maintains a unique database of over 2,000 suburban retrofits, hosts the REDESIGNING CITIES podcast series, was Architectural Record’s 2018-19 Woman Educator of the year and was recognized in 2017 by Planetizen as one of the 100 most influential urbanists (ever!).
Dunham-Jones will present compelling case studies and explore topics that resonate in our region: dead malls, dying strip malls, big box stores, aging office parks, and rundown apartment complexes, among others. While the first generation of suburban retrofits were primarily focused on reducing auto-dependence (still relevant), the new generation are doing that in addition to improving public health, supporting an aging society, leveraging social capital for equity, providing new jobs, all while applying strategies for water and energy resilience to adapt to climate change.
Guests are asked to check in at the Admissions Desk at 6:15pm before the lecture. Dunham-Jones will appear on WXXI's "Connections with Evan Dawson" to preview this lecture on February 9 at 1pm.
