CNU 22, our national congress, will be sited in Buffalo for 2014 and this retreat kicks off activity for this national event.

 

Expect a relaxed program with plenty of time for conversation, organizing and networking, featuring marquee speakers, as well as local activists and professionals. This is an opportunity to learn about New Urbanism and get involved in the region where we will meet in 2014.

6/7 - NE Sustainable Communities Workshop

Coming up on June 7 at John Jay College in Manhattan is the Northeast Sustainable Communities Workshop, which combines sustainability with community revitalization. Leaders in these fields will be on hand to discuss topics such as federal funding of sustainable development, business opportunities, Brownfields, and economic development. Federal, state & local public sector environmental agencies are partnering in this unique workshop.

Join us for Laurie Volk: The New Housing Paradigm (this event has been postponed)

Please join CNU New York  for a lecture by one of the nation's foremost experts on housing and demographic trends, Laurie Volk of Zimmerman Volk Associates. This lecture will discuss changing trends in demographics across the country, the lifestyle choices that individuals make within the demographic groups, and how the trends impact urban housing formats, mixed-use developments, transit-oriented development, and revitalization of existing urban areas.  The lecturer, Laurie Volk, along with her partner Todd Zimmerman, have been retained by cities and developers all over the US for her expertise in this field.

John Massengale has been elected to the CNU National Board

A Message from the CNU New York Executive Committee

We are writing to urge you to vote for John Massengale, the Chair of CNU New York, in the first election for the national CNU Board in which the membership will choose the Board members. John is the Founding Chair of the New York chapter, and during his tenure we have been one of the most active CNU chapters.

Under John's leadership, we have reached out to other New York groups and held events with the Museum of the City of New York, the Municipal Art Society, the NYU Wagner School of Public Service, AIA NY, the Regional Plan Association and others. We've had tours and happy hours with our younger members, and we've had events with CNU President John Norquist, CNU founders Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, local planners and architects Brad Perkins and James von Klemperer, and other notable figures like Léon Krier, Jonathan Rose, Shelley Poticha and New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman.

John has worked hard to help build a Board that includes seasoned practitioners, NextGen members and contributors from multiple and diverse professions. He is the only Board candidate from the Northeast, and New York has had only one Board member in the history of the CNU.

You can read a Letter of Recommendation for John from CNU New York Board member Gianni Longo here. John's other letters of recommendation were from Stefanos Polyzoides and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.

Voting will continue through May 11. There will be computers for voting at CNU 20, but you will need your CNU password and ID to vote - both of these you can get online. We urge you to vote for John.

Message from the CNU New York Executive Committee

 

 

The Twentieth Anniversary Congress will meet in Florida next week. Almost 40% of those attending will be going to their first Congress, and a quarter more have been to one or two. In New York, over half our members are attending. So for newcomers and old hands, several New York chapter members have volunteered to be available to provide information, contacts, and whatever else you may need to all our New York friends and colleagues.

We will have Board members at the orientation breakfast on Thursday morning and look forward to seeing you then. That night we will continue our tradition of providing the best chapter meetup - this year we're teaming up with CNU Florida, the host Chapter. Please join us "Up on the Roof" at Sky 309, over Roxy's Pub on Clematis Street between 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM.

Last but not least, John Massengale is running for the CNU national Board in the first election of CNU Directors by the membership. He's the only candidate from the Northeast, and New York has only had one Board member in the history of the CNU.
