This Saturday, promises a fascinating day-long conference on public housing preservation. The Fitch Colloquium: Why Preserve Public Housing? is organized by Columbia University's Historic Preservation Program and co-sponsored by Docomomo US. Themes will revolve around "The Architecture of Public Housing: Preserving a Post-War Legacy." Join us at Columbia's Wood Auditorium in Avery Hall from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm.

In a world racked by climate change, financial instability, social injustice and high unemployment, a metropolitan and regional approach to building and development will help us both locally and globally. Shelley Poticha, Director of the Office of Sustainable Housing and Communities at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has been at the forefront of the Obama administration's mandate to have HUD, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation work together to support sustainable, affordable and livable community development. Jonathan F.P. Rose is President of the Jonathan Rose Companies, an award-winning private sector leader in creating and regenerating vibrant, attractive, healthy, and equitable communities, including Via Verde, a 1.5-acre green, mixed-use development in the South Bronx. Rose and Poticha have collaborated for more than three decades on work ranging from individual buildings to regional plans. They bring valuable insight into the future of community building in New York in these difficult times. Michael Kimmelman was appointed the chief architecture critic  for the The New York Times in the summer of 2011. He is an author, critic, columnist, and a concert pianist. He has written on issues of public housing, public space, community development and social responsibility.

3/27 - MAS Panel on NYU Expansion

The Municipal Art Society of New York is hosting a panel on New York University's campus expansion plan. From MAS's announcement:

NYU is the latest city institution to evoke controversy with its ambitious expansion plan, more than doubling the density on two Greenwich Village area superblocks. Our expert panel includes Hilary Ballon, deputy vice chancellor NYU Abu Dhabi and professor of urban studies and architecture; Gary Hack, former dean and professor of urban design, University of Pennsylvania; Brad Hoylman, chair, Manhattan Community Board 2; and Ron Shiffman, professor, Pratt Graduate Center for Planning. HR&A Chairman John Alschuler will moderate.
