Robert Moses on the Silver-ish Screen

Hot off the press! You many know The Power Broker as the thorough classic that's required reading in many city planning classes, or have seen it recently on a Planner's bookshelf. HBO will be adapting Robert Caro's 1974 biopic on New York City's "Master Builder" Robert Moses. It will be directed by Oliver Stone and produced by Stone, Peter Guber and James Gandolfini (of The Sapranos).

Coming up on Nov. 15 is Zoning The City: Addressing New York City's 21st Century Challenges

This one-day conference is run by the NYC Dept. of City Planning, Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, and Baruch College's Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute.

From 8:30 am - 5:30 pm, this is your chance to learn about New York's vital role & future in Zoning.  The location is the McGraw-Hill Conference Center, 1221 6th Ave (2nd Fl., enter on 49th St).

In this 50th anniversary year of the 1961 Zoning Resolution... a day-long conference designed to cultivate new thinking about zoning as a governmental tool that may be used to address major economic, social, environmental, and physical challenges facing New York City in the 21st century.

Co-chaired by New York City Planning Department Director Amanda Burden and Harvard University Professor Jerold S. Kayden, the conference features prominent experts who will describe the challenges facing New York City and the role zoning should and should not play in meeting them. The conference will explore the possibilities and limitations of zoning as a tool to be employed by New York City as it seeks to compete globally, to offer economic and social opportunities for all its citizens, to ensure a sustainable environment, and to enhance its public realm.

A presentation on Hanoi Capital Construction Master Plan by Perkins Eastman. Brad Perkins and Paul Buckhurst will discuss the framework to guide the city’s expected urban growth to over nine million people by 2030. The plan establishes a vision for the city to become one of the most livable, sustainable, and attractive world capital cities. The plan protects 70% of Hanoi—including its natural areas and agricultural land—as part of a broad sustainability strategy. The plan calls for strict preservation of the historic precincts.
